Verdict for 18-year-old: ‘Debts ignored because father always paid’

Date:

An 18-year-old entrepreneur’s son from Linz had to appear before the Linz Regional Court on Friday for serious fraud. He was accused of causing a total damage of 180,000 euros through loans and online fraud. He must now spend a total of 32 months in prison and the sentence is final.

The desire for quick money and wealth at a young age repeatedly drives teens and young adults to crime. However, other options would probably have been open to this 18-year-old from Linz, who had to appear before the Linz Regional Court on Friday afternoon. Yet he used documents and documents from his girlfriend’s father to obtain loans worth almost 120,000 euros from various banks.

Major damage caused
The total damage amounted to 180,000 euros. He had also purchased goods worth 42,000 euros with a credit card, but never paid for them, and he had used up the overdraft limit on several other accounts. He also collected money for goods that he offered for sale online but never shipped. The young man used the scammed money to buy a Mercedes and even an Audi R8, a super sports car. The man also wanted to buy a second Mercedes, a CLA, but withdrew from the purchase after receiving the keys and vehicle documents. But he kept this to himself and that is why he also had to answer for withholding documents.

From a wealthy family
The 18-year-old does not come from a poor family at all: his father is an entrepreneur, he himself went to the private Aloisianum elite secondary school in Linz and most recently worked as an office clerk. His defense was also based on this: “I ignored the debt and thought: somehow I can pay it off,” said de Linzer. “My dad always used to pay off my debts, so I just didn’t think about it!”

Not his first scam
In May 2023, the young man had already been convicted of serious fraud by the Linz Regional Court. At that time he served as a prisoner for a few months. However, just three weeks before his parole, he decided not to return and went into hiding with his girlfriend. There he ran out of money, after which he started committing fraud again on a sales platform. “And then I fell back into this delusions of grandeur, which had already been my downfall,” said the person with a previous conviction.

Vindication with ex-girlfriend
The young man also blamed his ex-girlfriend for his misdeeds: “She put a lot of pressure on me, always wanted expensive gifts and that’s why I started cheating,” the convicted man said. His new current girlfriend was completely different, but he couldn’t take away the pressure of having to give her something. She found the expensive gifts more of a burden, but registered the cars anyway due to her boyfriend’s evasion of justice and regularly drove to school in the Mercedes SUV, sometimes even in the super sports car. She also never questioned the expensive gifts, because she probably assumed that the money came from the successful company of the fraudster’s father, who has now been legally convicted twice.

Multiple scams
Due to the lack of insight and the previous conviction in question, the sentence was correspondingly severe: 20 months of unconditional imprisonment plus 12 months of his previous sentence, which would originally have been conditional, were now actually served. The 18-year-old will therefore have to remain in prison for 32 months and will also have to pay back almost the full compensation.
