A 60-year-old man from Innviertel let his grandson (5) ride on the luggage carrier of his moped – without a child seat and without a crash helmet. The boy got his foot stuck between the spokes of the rear wheel and had to be treated by an emergency doctor and flown to hospital by helicopter.
A ride in the Braunau district ended in a tragic accident on Thursday afternoon. A 60-year-old man from Innviertel drove his moped at walking pace across agricultural land around 4 p.m.
His five-year-old grandson was sitting on the luggage rack, not in the child seat. Neither was wearing a hard hat.
Boy flown to hospital
According to police, the little boy got his foot stuck between the spokes of the rear wheel on a slightly inclined gravel road and blocked the tire. The grandfather immediately stopped and administered first aid. An emergency doctor was also alerted and treated the five-year-old before he was flown to the state hospital in Salzburg.
