On Thursday afternoon, workers at a construction site in Vienna-Meidling made a gruesome discovery: they found a dead man in a ventilation shaft about three stories deep in an apartment building still under construction. Police say there are currently no indications of a violent crime. But it could also have been a burglar who had an accident on the construction site.
The workers called 911 around 4:45 p.m. They initially suspected that a colleague had fallen into the shaft. Emergency services, who climbed down to rescue the person, eventually discovered that the man was long dead. “He should have fallen in the night,” said APA police spokesman Markus Dittrich.
Attempted burglary cannot be ruled out
The dead man was carrying a crowbar and a flashlight. According to officials, a break-in or attempted break-in cannot be ruled out. The front door of the house was also broken open. The identities of the dead are not yet known. In any case, it must not be an employee of the construction company.
