After Saturday evening’s devastating storms, skies gradually darkened again in some parts of the country on Sunday afternoon. There is a threat of new thunderstorms, even as some rivers continue to flood. “You can only hope that these areas are spared, because every thunderstorm would be one too many,” worries Ubimet meteorologist Nikolas Zimmermann.
The situation is still very tense after the heavy storms in Styria. A total of five mudflows blocked the Pyhrnautobahn (A9) near Bösebach. This will remain closed until the end of next week. In the meantime, civil protection alarms had gone off in Deutschfeistritz, Eggersdorf and in Nord-Andritz in Graz.
In Burgenland, the Oberwart district was the hardest hit and the entire district was affected by a disaster. The federal army helps in both states.
Large hail and tornadoes are possible in the southeast
And while the clean-up work is in full swing, the next thunderstorms are already moving across the country. According to Zimmermann, the focus is along the Northern Alps and in the east of the country. Particularly heavy storms with locally very large hail and tornadoes are possible in the southeast. In the late afternoon the highest warning level was declared in parts of Styria, Burgenland and Lower Austria.
A new week brings the end of the series of storms
According to forecasts, the weather situation will gradually calm down from Monday. Isolated thunderstorms are still possible from Carinthia to the eastern lowlands. They will be strongest in southern Styria and southern Burgenland.
It will be considerably cooler in the coming days, temperatures will barely rise above 20 degrees – this means that the risk of thunder has been averted. Warmer summer weather is not expected again until the end of this week.
