At least 39 people have been killed in a shipping accident off the coast of Yemen, according to the UN. There are still 150 people missing and 71 survivors.
Every year, tens of thousands of people fleeing conflict, natural disasters and economic hardship from the Horn of Africa make their way through the Red Sea to find a better life in Saudi Arabia or other Gulf countries. In April, two boats sank off the coast of Djibouti within two weeks, killing dozens of people.
The number of refugees has tripled
According to the IOM, 1,350 people died on this migration route between 2014 and 2023. The UN agency said last month that despite the route’s many dangers, the number of migrants arriving in Yemen “has tripled between 2021 and 2023, from around 27,000 to more than 90,000.”
Migrants often face additional dangers when they arrive in Yemen; A civil war has been raging in the country for ten years.
