A survey conducted the day after the European elections shows that Austrians are clearly committed to EU membership. 76 percent of respondents from the Austrian Association for European Policy (ÖGfE) were in favor of Austria remaining a member of the European Union. 17 percent argued in favor of leaving, 7 percent did not declare themselves.
Compared to the previous ÖGfE survey in March, the number of supporters of EU membership has reportedly increased by 11 percentage points. The number of people in favor of leaving the EU has fallen by 6 percentage points. According to the ÖGfE, the number of people who are unsure about this question or do not file a tax return has also decreased, by 5 percentage points.
“Support undisputed”
“The outcome of the European Parliament elections in Austria is also an indicator of dissatisfaction with national and European politics. In any case, our post-election analysis shows that support for Austria’s EU membership is uncontested and particularly high the day after,” summarized Paul Schmidt, Secretary General of the Austrian Association for European Policy.
“Current approval for EU membership is the highest since December 2017, while the number of outspoken opponents of membership was last at a similarly low level in September 2020,” Schmidt said. “The EU elections were an outlet for many people to let off steam and express frustration and criticism. “The issues of security, asylum, migration and inflation are of particular concern, which is reflected not least in an increase in the number of votes for parties in the right-wing political spectrum,” Schmidt analyzed.
“Nevertheless, there is no doubt in the minds of the vast majority of the population that these challenges are best addressed in a well-coordinated manner and together – and not alone,” said the ÖGfE Secretary General. Schmidt expects that the current high level of acceptance will remain stable over a longer period of time and will not prove to be a flash in the pan if we manage to develop understandable solutions that people can feel.
Online survey with 775 participants
The current survey was conducted on June 10 by the market institute on behalf of the ÖGfE. According to the Society for European Politics, 775 people aged between 16 and 80 were surveyed online across Austria. According to the information, the maximum statistical fluctuation range is 3.59 percent.
