Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is once again causing outrage: Putin’s friend claimed all of Ukraine as part of Russia on a map for Russia’s national day.
An animated image flashes across the screen, accompanied by the sounds of the Russian national anthem. A white, blue and red flag flies over a map of Russia – all of Ukraine is marked as Russian up to the borders with Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. Medvedev posted this statement on his blog on Telegram. It is striking that Belarus, which is closely linked to Russia, was not taken into account.
To what extent does Russia want to subjugate Ukraine?
In more than two years of war, Moscow has given inconsistent answers, both official and propaganda, about the extent to which Russia wants to subjugate Ukraine. One of the objectives is for Russia to fully conquer the four Ukrainian regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson, which the country has declared annexed. There were further considerations about Kharkov in the east and in the south with the port city of Odessa, and finally also about the capital Kiev. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in April that at best the future of western Ukraine around Lviv was open.
This is what Medvedev’s image looked like:
From liberal hope to hardliner
During his term as president from 2008 to 2012, Medvedev was seen as Russia’s liberal hope. Since Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the deputy head of the National Security Council has become one of the biggest hardliners, defending the war with inflammatory posts on social networks.
“Russia Day”
On June 12, 1990, the parliament of the Soviet Republic of Russia decided on state sovereignty and thus on the practical independence of the crumbling Soviet Union. The day is therefore celebrated annually as Russia Day. On this day, President Vladimir Putin presented state prizes in Moscow for achievements in culture and technology. He called on the country to show unity in the face of the war – which he himself had ordered. “In this difficult time, we are united by patriotism and responsibility for the fate of the homeland,” he said, according to the TASS agency.
