The death of a 22-year-old woman in Vienna-Floridsdorf, who was killed with an ax, caused horror. Bizarre images show how the alleged murderer walks into the street after the bloody act, bare-chested, with the ax still in his hand.
In the video leaked to krone.at (see above) you see the man kneeling on the sidewalk and crossing himself several times. The 26-year-old Romanian hits the asphalt with his ax several times before getting up and walking calmly across the street, with his head held high and the ax on his shoulders.
Police officers quickly arrived on the scene
Shortly afterwards, the man rioted in the street, smashing a ground-floor window with his weapon and damaging a parked vehicle. Shortly afterwards two police officers arrived on the scene – they had just been on a fast track across a nearby traffic grid square. When the armed man saw the police officers, he suddenly ran towards the officers. The man swung the ax in their direction. A powerful blow struck the civilian patrol from which the emergency services had just escaped. “He actually pushed his way through the vehicle,” said police spokesman Markus Dittrich.
Jumps into civilian patrol
In one of the videos filmed from a window, an officer is seen taking cover behind the civilian patrol with his weapon drawn and pointed at him. When the half-naked man jumps onto the hood of the car, the police officer backs away and falls to the ground, likely injuring his head. The attacker runs away and several shots are fired. Because the situation seems life-threatening to the police officers, the injured officer shoots the man with the ax.
How many shots were fired and on what part of the body is still under investigation. First aid measures were immediately taken. These were initially initiated by a Wega officer trained as a paramedic and then continued by Vienna’s professional rescue service. However, the 26-year-old died on the spot from his injuries.
Investigations into the use of firearms are conducted by the Investigation and Complaints Office for Allegations of Assault of the Federal Office for the Prevention and Combating of Corruption (BAK EBM), in cooperation with the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Vienna. A large police force was deployed to the crime scene.
The Vienna State Criminal Investigation Department, body/life research area, has taken over the investigation into the death of the 22-year-old. According to police, a clear motive is still unknown. The 26-year-old already showed enormous psychological abnormalities beforehand.
Eleventh femicide this year
District leader Georg Papai (SPÖ) of Floridsdorf was shocked by the bloody act on Wednesday and expressed his condolences to the relatives. “Everyone should be able to live well and safely in Floridsdorf. Violence against women has no place here, no place anywhere,” Papai said. According to the Autonomous Austrian Association for Women’s Shelters (AÖF), this was the eleventh femicide in Austria this year.
