Storm in Burgenland – brave rescuer pulled helpless woman out of the floods

Date:

Because she wanted to go home to her dogs, the owner was in need during the floods in the south of Burgenland. Jan Baldauf from Unterschützen immediately came to the woman’s aid.

The love for her dogs almost became the downfall of a pensioner amid the storm disaster in Unterschützen. It was raining and the streets had been flooded for a long time. On her way to her four-legged companions, the woman suddenly encountered bodies of water like a raging river between two single-family homes.

Stuck in fence
The passerby was completely surprised and almost lost her balance. In a panic, she clung to a fence to prevent herself from falling and feared for her life in the meter-high water. She was shaking all over.

The distressed woman was discovered by a neighbor. “We were standing on the roof when I saw the local resident desperately fighting the water. She was almost swept away by the floods,” says Jan Baldauf.

Reached woman with ladder
The young worker, who works in civil engineering, did not hesitate for a second and promptly came up with a rescue plan. “I was given an extendable ladder and tried to reach the woman safely,” Jan Baldauf remembers of the courageous assistance.

Climbed over to the woman
In order not to become a victim of the flood himself, he had to move slowly to the danger point. He then placed the ladder on the fence and an open gate so he could climb to the pensioner.

Dogs safe
“I then pulled her up and took her to safety via the ladder,” says the rescuer. The woman was injured and is in hospital. Their beloved dogs were rescued and veterinarian Christoph Haller cared for them until the owner’s daughter picked them up. The greatest praise goes to Jan Baldauf: “His courageous efforts are a role model for everyone.”
