Two weeks after the devastating fire in the center of Rohrbach, there has been a surprising twist. A Kurdish restaurateur rents his restaurant to Vietnamese people who have been made homeless by the fire. For the helpful innkeeper, “it’s no problem, you just have to stick together.”
At 2 a.m. on May 28, sirens sounded in Rohrbach: a building on the town square had gone up in flames and alarm level three was activated. A total of 13 fire brigades from the area battled the flames into the early morning hours, and there was no rescue for a single person. A 53-year-old died after trying to escape by jumping out of a window.
The tragic fire at a prime location has left the Vietnamese owners of the ‘Madame Kim’ restaurant virtually homeless. Two weeks later there was a surprising and pleasant turnaround. “We would like to inform you that our second location at Stadtplatz 14 has been temporarily rented to the ‘Madame Kim Restaurant’. ‘Madame Kim’ will run the restaurant for a year while her old restaurant is rebuilt,” said pizzeria boss Cino Secilmis, a Kurd of Turkish descent who runs restaurants in Bad Leonfelden and the Rohrbach indoor swimming pool.
Much praise for the generous action
“On the same day that the fire broke out, I offered our restaurant to my colleague. I don’t mind, you have to stick together,” Secilmis says.
Many users on Facebook saw it differently and highly praised Secilmis for its generous campaign. Moreover, the building, which was severely affected by the fire, will be demolished and rebuilt, owner Karla Kern explains at the request of “Krone”.
