The Israeli army is considered one of the best equipped in the world. But now images are spreading on social media showing soldiers using a medieval-looking catapult or bow and arrow to shoot at hideouts of the Shiite militia Hezbollah.
Since the war between Israel and the radical Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip began on October 7, shelling between Israel and Hezbollah fighters has occurred almost daily. The intensity of the fighting had increased in recent days. Hezbollah attacks on Israel’s northern border area have increased, especially after the assassination of Supreme Commander Taleb Sami Abdallah. Instead of air strikes, Israel now responded with incendiary bullets.
Videos of a so-called trebuchet hurling burning ammunition over the border wall are currently circulating on the short-messaging platform X. Other images also show flaming arrows being shot towards Lebanon.
Army speaks of ‘local initiative’
The aim is apparently to burn down dense bushes in the border area so that enemy fighters cannot hide there, the Kan public broadcaster reported on Thursday. According to Kan, the military said it was only a “local initiative” and not a weapon in widespread use.
NGO complains about the use of phosphorus bombs
However, arson has long been part of the Israeli army’s military-tactical repertoire. The newspaper “Israel Hayom” reports on the previous use of Molotov cocktails thrown at the Lebanese side. Human rights organization Amnesty International has complained several times that the Israeli air force also drops phosphorus bombs.
White phosphorus begins to burn as soon as it comes into contact with oxygen and is very difficult to extinguish. The region experiences hot and dry weather, which can cause fires to spread quickly. In recent days, fires have also broken out on the Israeli side as a result of Hezbollah attacks.
