Senior politicians are meeting in Switzerland today and Sunday to discuss the prospects for peace in Ukraine. The conference could be a “first step” in a peace process, a press release said on Friday.
The peace conference in Ukraine, which will be opened by Swiss President Viola Amherd, aims to create conditions for a later peace summit with the participation of Russia. Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) is also there. “There must be an end to dying,” he said. An important point of the discussions was global food security.
100 delegations have been registered
Countries close to Russia and Moscow, such as China, are not participating this time. Discussions will include humanitarian, food and nuclear security. In addition to Nehammer, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had asked Switzerland to attend the conference, was also expected to participate. Vice President Kamala Harris wants to come from the US. A total of 90 delegations were registered at the beginning of this week.
Thousands of security forces in action
The conference will take place on the Bürgenstock, a 1,100 meter high mountain ridge directly on Lake Lucerne. There is a large luxury hotel complex there. In addition to police and security forces, Switzerland has also deployed 4,000 soldiers for security.
According to the Swiss news agency sda, “extraordinary security measures” are intended to ensure that everything runs smoothly. This includes precautions against biological and cyber attacks, as well as counter-espionage.
