Thousands of football fans were celebrating on Hamburg’s Reeperbahn on Sunday afternoon in the run-up to the European Championship match between Poland and the Netherlands, when a man suddenly started an uprising. According to police, he attacked fans and police officers with a pickaxe.
Attacker seriously injured by gunshots
According to information from ‘Bild’, the police first used pepper spray against the attacker. An officer then fired a warning shot before multiple shots were fired. The man was hit in the leg and fell to the ground. He was seriously injured and received medical treatment at the scene.
Apparently he wanted to ignite an incendiary device
