A serious paragliding accident occurred in the municipality of Schoppernau in the Bregenzerwald on Sunday morning. A 24-year-old German landed hard on the ground after a failed ‘test’ and suffered serious injuries.
The course of the accident is extremely unfortunate: the 24-year-old paraglider pilot wanted to test the deployment of the emergency parachute without any necessity. However, this became entangled in the main parachute, causing the German to spin uncontrollably towards the ground at high speed.
The second emergency parachute only dampened the impact slightly
Although he activated the second emergency parachute, it could only dampen the impact somewhat: the man landed on the ground close to the landing site, where he remained seriously injured. After receiving initial care from emergency services, he was flown by emergency helicopter to Feldkirch State Hospital.
