Major operation in Villach: The fire brigade had to go to a retirement home due to a fire. A pensioner was in danger.
The fire alarm system of a nursing home in Villach sounded the alarm at the fire station shortly after 7:30 PM on Sunday. Villach’s main fire station immediately responded. “Heavy smoke could already be seen in the corridor,” said Martin Regenfelder, deputy commander of the HFW Villach.

But the smoke was not released into the hallway, but into a room. “In the room of a bedridden pensioner,” adds the firefighter. She was immediately removed from the smoke-filled room by staff and given first aid by the Red Cross.
A toxic carbon monoxide concentration was already developing in the room. “The trigger was a piece of plastic placed on a stovetop that was turned on,” Regenfelder said. The toxic smoke was blown out of the room using powerful electric fans. Regenfelder concluded: “The fire alarm probably could have prevented something worse!”
