Of the eight cattle, six are still on their way and have now been on their way for over a week. But this also keeps the authorities and emergency services on their toes, who want to prevent a shooting this time. A fishing operation on Monday afternoon corresponds with a lot of optimism.
Escaped highland cattle keep the emergency services of the Waldviertel district in Waidhofen an der Thaya on their toes. Not far from the district capital, eight adult calves have been on the road since at least June 10.
“We have since known that the animals escaped from a stable in Dimling. There are different statements from the population about the exact time of their escape,” explains deputy district head Johannes Tüchler, saying that it could be possible that the animals have been “on tour” to the “Krone” for some time. Almost exactly a year ago, the region also had a livestock runaway, although not all of the animals survived.
Two calves are already back home
Two of the eight cattle have now returned to the stable independently. The remaining six are still “on the move” and have reportedly been behaving peacefully all week. “According to the official veterinarian’s assessment, there is currently no danger to the animals,” Tüchler added.
Daily police operations and warning signs
Insiders report that police operations were taking place daily due to the livestock. Many warning signs have been placed for local road users, but previous attempts to identify them have failed. The Waidhofen city fire brigade was on duty with the drone on Sunday. With complete success: five cattle were located.
On Monday evening there was a “peaceful solution” without the animals having to be shot. “The animals are currently being anesthetized by the official veterinarian and the owner and returned to the pasture,” Tüchler emphasized late to the “Krone”.
