This brutal act shocked France: in the Parisian suburb of Courbevoie, three boys aged twelve and thirteen allegedly raped and abused a twelve-year-old girl – a Jew – for anti-Semitic reasons. The three suspects were arrested.
The girl was in Henri Regnault Park near her apartment on Saturday evening when two boys blocked her way and dragged her into an empty building. The third teenager arrived and insulted the 12-year-old as a “dirty Jew”, as the daily ‘Le Figaro’ reported, citing police documents.
Threatened with death
The girl was then beaten, thrown to the ground and photographed. One of the attackers held a lit lighter to her cheek and threatened to ‘burn’ her. The twelve-year-old was then forced to have sexual intercourse. The young people allegedly threatened her with death if she told this to the police.
After the perpetrators fled, the girl told her parents at home about the crime, after which they alerted the police. Together with the friend the twelve-year-old was traveling with, she was able to describe the suspects. The responsible public prosecutor’s office in the Parisian suburb of Nanterre ordered the territorial brigade to protect the family and investigate. They were able to arrest the three suspected young perpetrators, reports ‘Le Figaro’.
Rape ‘out of revenge’?
The anti-Semitic background of the crime was further confirmed when a photo of a burning Israeli flag was discovered on the mobile phone of one of the boys, the news portal “Le Nouveau Detective” reported. The juvenile in question was the victim’s ex-boyfriend. The newspaper ‘Le Parisien’ reported that the boy was angry because the girl had allegedly not told him she was Jewish. During interrogation, the boys allegedly partially admitted to the attack. They would also have stated that they acted out of revenge, writes the ‘Parisien’.
Two teenagers (both 13) were charged by the Nanterre public prosecutor’s office on Tuesday evening with gang rape, death threats, insults and violence. The third (12) was called as a witness to the rape and was also charged with the other crimes. The crimes of insult and violence are made more difficult because they are motivated by anti-Semitic feelings, according to the Public Prosecution Service.
Youth in police custody
The two 13-year-olds were taken into police custody and the 12-year-old was given a provisional judicial education measure. In France there is no age limit for criminal liability. However, perpetrators under the age of 18 cannot be punished as adults and must answer before the juvenile court. Imprisonment can only be imposed after reaching the age of 13.
Since Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the number of anti-Semitic acts has increased sharply in France, but also in many other countries. Nearly 13 percent of anti-Jewish attacks in the country took place in schools.
