German Vice President of the Bundestag Katrin Göring-Eckardt (Greens) sparked outrage with a post outside the European Football Championship. After heavy criticism, she deleted her post a short time later.
After the German national team’s 2-0 win against Hungary on Wednesday evening, the Green politician wrote: “This team is really great. Imagine if there were only white German players.” This caused a real shit storm.
A few hours later she came back and deleted her message. “I’m sorry for the way I worded it. What excited me was that 21 percent of Germans would think it would be better if there were more ‘whites’ in the national team. I am proud of this team and hope that we can still convince the 21 percent.” She also added a photo of DFB defender Jonathan Tah, with his quote from an ARD documentary: “We are Müller, but we are also Tah and Gundogan. . And we are all pursuing one goal together.”
Nagelsmann shocked
Shortly before the start of the European Championship, the WDR caused a major scandal among our neighbors with a survey into the opinions of German football fans on topics such as the skin color of the players. According to the survey, one in five people in Germany would like to have more white players in the DFB squad.
“I find it strange that we ask such a question in public law. I was shocked,” national coach Julian Nagelsmann complained.
