At least 37 people have died in India after consuming adulterated liquor. According to the Chief Minister of the state of Tamil Nadu, the illegally distilled alcohol was mixed with methanol.
More than a hundred people were admitted to hospitals in Viluppuram, a city in Tamil Nadu in southern India, with symptoms of poisoning such as vomiting and stomach pain (see video above). It is said that those responsible have already been arrested.
Several suspects arrested
Police seized large quantities of adulterated liquor, which laboratory tests showed contained toxic methanol. Several suspects have been arrested, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin said on X (formerly Twitter). Several officials who failed to prevent the crime were suspended or transferred.
Homemade alcohol is widely sold, especially in rural India, because it is cheap. Very often, highly toxic methanol is added to the liquid to increase the alcohol content. Large amounts of it can cause blindness, liver damage and even death.
About 1000 deaths annually
Deaths from illegally distilled alcohol are not uncommon in India. According to official figures, around 1,000 people die every year from drinking adulterated alcohol.
