A mysterious sonic boom is currently causing conjecture on the Mediterranean coast. Initially it was thought to be an earthquake; according to experts, a meteorite or an airplane could have caused the loud noise.
The bang could be heard on Thursday in Tuscany and the French island of Corsica. The town of Campo nell’Elba on the Italian holiday island of Elba announced on the online network Facebook that a nearby monitoring station had recorded a “seismic acoustic event that was noticed by everyone” at 4:30 p.m.
The regional president suspected an earthquake and then rowed back
According to media reports, the explosion was also clearly noticeable in Corsica. Tuscan regional president Eugenio Giani initially spoke of an earthquake, but later changed his mind because the Italian earthquake monitoring station did not register any earthquakes.
The region’s geophysical institute and the University of Florence said measurements showed the quake’s trigger was moving at a speed of more than 600 kilometers per second. “A meteorite that entered the atmosphere appears most likely and is consistent with recorded data,” the report said.
Expert: “The most likely hypothesis is an airplane”
However, the daily newspaper “Corriere della Sera” quoted an unnamed employee of the Italian Civil Protection Authority: “An impact would have been registered by seismographs. The most likely hypothesis is still an airplane.” According to the newspaper, it was not the first such explosion: similar events were also reported on Elba in 2012, 2016 and 2023. The cause is still unclear to this day.
