A 19-year-old Ukrainian from Altmüster found himself in distress while descending from Traunstein in Upper Austria, 1,400 meters above sea level. The amateur athlete called 911 and Alpine police arrived by helicopter to rescue him. The ill-equipped and frightened man was flown into the valley by rope.
Around 6 a.m. on Thursday, the 19-year-old started his mountain tour to the Traunstein with another 19-year-old Ukrainian from Altmüster and a 61-year-old from Gmunden. After conquering the summit, the trio wanted to descend to the valley via the Hans-Hernler-Steig, but at 1,400 meters above sea level the 19-year-old suddenly developed health problems.
The deployment must be canceled
He called the emergency number on his mobile phone and the Libelle police helicopter crew came to help. Then the Ukrainian’s 61-year-old companion suddenly called and wanted to cancel the mission by phone because “he will get the man to the valley somehow.”
Up the mountain with sneakers
But the experienced Alpine police officer assessed the situation correctly, the helicopter took off and around 4 p.m. the exhausted and completely frightened man was taken to the valley by rope. It is said that he only wore sneakers instead of hiking boots.
