Shock in Salzburg! A three-year-old boy fell from the balcony of a residential building in the Liefering district on Thursday. He fell from the second floor into a meadow. The child was injured and had to be taken to hospital.
The injured toddler’s parents were likely not in the apartment at the time of the accident. Both parents were charged with bodily harm by negligence.
Investigations are underway
Further details about the accident are not yet known. The Salzburg public prosecutor’s office has already started the investigation.
The number of windows is increasing
Just last week, the Road Safety Board (KFV) reported an alarming increase in the number of children falling from windows. According to this research, at least seven children had already fallen from windows in Austria on June 11, 2024, one of which had fatal consequences. For comparison, two window falls have been documented in the entire first half of 2023. Just a few moments of inattention would be enough for a defenestration. In addition, assumed measures such as insect screens are not always appropriate security measures and would create a false sense of security.
According to the KFV, window falls are not among the most common, but are among the most serious, accidents among children. Children between the ages of two and four are particularly at risk, because at this age the urge to explore and freedom of movement increase rapidly.
