In May, two-year-old Roland was run over by a Hoftrac driven by his own grandfather on his parents’ farm in Mühlviertel. The Public Prosecution Service accuses Mühlviertler (66) of negligently killing his grandson. The penalty for this is 3 years in prison, but the case can also be dealt with in a diversionary manner.
Little Roland would have been three years old in the fall. Instead of a birthday celebration, this day will once again be extremely painful for his family. Because nothing has been the same for the surviving relatives since May 11. That day the two-year-old closed his eyes forever. He died as a result of a terrible accident on his parents’ farm in Kirchberg/Donau.
Boy secretly ran into the stable
As reported, the two-year-old is said to have secretly run into the stable building where his grandfather was working with a wheel loader while playing with his father and brother David (1). Unfortunately, the 66-year-old did not notice his grandson running behind the vehicle; he backed up – and ran over Roland.
Psychological assistance
The little one probably died immediately. Attempts at resuscitation failed and the emergency doctor flown in could no longer help the boy. A world collapsed for the family. The pain of losing the child on the day before Mother’s Day was limitless.
A “Sea of Tears” (Quote from Mayor Franz Hofer, who expressed his condolences to the relatives and offered support the day after the accident) was the result. The mourners had to receive psychological care. The grandfather in particular blames himself for not having seen his grandson.
In addition to the human loss, the 66-year-old also faces criminal consequences. “We have filed a criminal complaint on suspicion of negligent homicide,” confirms Ulrike Breiteneder, spokeswoman for the Linz public prosecutor’s office.
Didn’t look in the rear view mirror
The grandfather forgot to look in the mirror before backing up. Breiteneder: “He should have ensured that no one was in the danger area.” Penalty: up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 720 daily rates. However, there is also a distraction arrangement in the room.
