Two German mountaineers were seriously injured in alpine accidents in Tyrol’s Pitztal and Karwendel Mountains on Saturday. Both women slipped and fell. They had to be rescued by helicopter and flown to hospitals.
The accident in the Pitztal took place late in the afternoon. Three German friends marched in the municipality of St. Leonhard from the Mauchele Alm over the Almsteig through the valley towards the city of Boden.
Wet ground was fatal
“To cross a stream, they chose an alternate route and left the marked path,” police reported. And then it happened: due to the rain, one of the women – a 48-year-old – slipped on the wet ground and was seriously injured.
Her companions made a distress call. “The seriously injured person was then rescued using rope and flown in an emergency helicopter to Zams Hospital,” investigators continued. The other two alpinists were escorted into the valley by the mountain rescue team.
