Dangerous alpine accident on Saturday morning in the Tyrolean Zams (Landeck district): A German climber (45) fell about ten meters while climbing the Schneekarlespitze after a boulder came loose from the wall and hit the man. He had to be rescued by helicopter.
The 45-year-old German left the Steinseehütte in Zams on Saturday morning with a 49-year-old compatriot for a round through the Schneekarlespitze. The two wanted to climb the 2641 meter high mountain via the southeast chimney. At the start of the fifth throw, the 45-year-old was already four to five meters into the wall as a lead climber when suddenly a 12 to 40 centimeters large boulder broke loose.
Climbing partner was able to secure a fall
The German then fell about ten meters over stepped ground. His climbing partner managed to pin him down, but the rock fell directly on the man, who was injured and stuck in the wall. The 49-year-old started the rescue chain.
The rescue helicopter crew rescued the victim with a rope and took him to hospital in Zams with injuries to his hand and chest.
