Children were disturbed after a sex education lesson at a primary school in the Mühlviertel and parents complained about the teacher’s methods. The procedure was stopped, the director of education justified this in the “Crown”.
A ‘sex film’ shown during sex education lessons at a primary school in the Mühlviertel caused great outrage among parents. The teacher also showed condoms to the nine to ten year old children – there are two classes – and explained why there are different flavors.
According to their parents, some fourth-graders were very concerned about the content. The Upper Austrian Education Directorate is now commenting on the allegations, saying the accusations against the teacher “were not taken seriously.”
Versatile complaints
“We have carefully reviewed the full-page complaints and examined the teaching materials used. The film in question has been approved by the ministry for teaching at this school level,” says education director Alfred Klampfer. From the perspective of the Directorate of Education, the teacher should not be accused of any misconduct. Therefore, the investigation and procedure were stopped.
The accusations came from two or three parents of the two fourth graders. “Of course we take such reports very seriously because it concerns the well-being of the children. But in this case we could not detect any violations,” Klampfer reports.
The several-page decree regulates sex education
The Ministry of Education has regulated how sex education should be provided in a multi-page “General Decree on Sex Education”. It says: “Sexual development is part of the overall development of the human personality and occurs at the cognitive, emotional, sensory and physical levels. Sex education should therefore be seen as a particularly important part of health promotion.”
This should start in early childhood and sex education should be an integral part until you leave school. The exact content has not been determined, external workshops can also be integrated into the lessons and there is approved teaching material.
