Own mobile phone network, jammers in cars, distraction tactics – Austria’s new Most Wanted from Vienna knew all the tricks and behaved like a real secret service.
“Sightings were almost impossible,” said the head of the investigation in charge of the most wanted case at the Federal Criminal Police Office (he remains anonymous for tactical reasons). All of the Darknet drug gang’s “service vehicles” were equipped with jammer technology. In addition, cameras in the cars provided protection against unwanted pursuers.
“From his criminal past, the fugitive knew exactly how to make life difficult for us. The perpetrators acted with secret service methods.”
Own mobile communication network
Telephone supervision was also not possible. According to the detective, Martin Schabel’s accomplice, who was responsible for IT and the drug store, rented a server from a cell phone provider to set up a gang-internal communications network. Bunker locations and wagons were rented or bought through fake companies.
Straw men served as directors — in one case, even a Hungarian homeless person who gave up his identity for a bottle of alcohol. As reported, the hunt for Viennese gang boss Martin Schabel, who has been in hiding since 2020, is in full swing worldwide.
“Drug trafficking in the virtual space”
“The drug trade has increasingly shifted to virtual space in recent years. The Federal Bureau of Investigation will continue to fight this crime and fight it through investigations and structural measures,” Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said.
