The renowned restaurant “Harry’s Bar” in Venice wants to ban children from using mobile phones. “The use of mobile phones and tablets under the age of eleven has unpredictable consequences for the digestion of our courses,” reads a funny warning on the menu, written by owner Arrigo Cipriani.
The 92-year-old Cipriani emphasized that he does not actually strictly prohibit anything. “I am a free man and have no desire to dictate anything to my customers, I have never done that before. But I try to have a sense of humor.” When cell phones came into fashion years ago, he put up a sign saying that using them would interfere with the preparation of his risotto. “Harry’s Bar” was once famous as a meeting place for artists, and Ernest Hemingway was considered a regular.
The aversion to smartphones in cafes is growing
In Italy, the aversion to smartphones in bars is growing. A restaurant in Verona recently started giving all guests a bottle of red wine if they hand in their cell phones before eating. The owner of Ristorante “Al Condominio”, Angelo Lella, told Radio Number One: “There is no reason to check your mobile phone every five seconds. For some people it is like medicine. This gives them a chance to put it aside and drink some good wine.
However, the bottle of wine is only available if the mobile phone is actually left at the entrance before eating. According to the landlord, 90 percent of guests take advantage of the offer. Other restaurants have been handing out vouchers for some time to guests who voluntarily give up their mobile phones.
