A tragedy like something out of a movie took place in the Lechtaler Alps in Tyrol on Saturday. A man has been missing there since October last year. Nine months after his disappearance, his brother found the missing person’s camera. This led rescuers to the body of the 57-year-old in Nassereith municipality (Reutte district) – and provided information about what might have happened to the missing person.
The local has been missing since October 18. The 57-year-old was believed to have gone on a mountain trek in the Lechtal Alps and something had happened to him. Since Saturday there is sad certainty: the man is dead. Although all searches so far have been unsuccessful, his brother did not want to give up the search for the missing person and finally came across his camera on Saturday afternoon. The camera was on a Steinmandl at the Mittlerer Kreuzjoch.
Man fell 100 meters
After reviewing the photos, the 57-year-old was found to have taken a photo of himself using a self-timer – according to police at the time he fell about 100 meters over steep, rocky terrain.
The brother called 911. The crew of the police helicopter eventually found the victim’s body. He was rescued with a rope and flown into the valley. The prosecutor ordered an autopsy.
