A convicted murderer has been executed by lethal injection in the US state of Texas. According to local media, the 41-year-old was pronounced dead at a Huntsville prison at 6:50 PM on Wednesday (local time). According to reports, Ramiro Gonzales was found guilty in 2006 of kidnapping, sexually assaulting and then shooting his drug dealer’s 18-year-old girlfriend about five years earlier.
In a letter to the victim’s family in 2022, he asked for forgiveness, the Washington Post wrote. However, the relatives of the dead supported his execution until the end. At the time of the crime, the man was 18 years old and addicted to drugs.
There had been previous attempts to prevent the execution, arguing that the convict was ineligible for the death penalty under state law. Because he is no longer dangerous to society.
Another execution is scheduled this week
Another execution is expected this week in the state of Oklahoma. According to CNN, the case involves a man who allegedly raped and murdered his seven-year-old stepdaughter in 1984. He protested his innocence. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, 24 death sentences were carried out in the United States last year.
