Severe flooding caused the elevator in the care center in Schandorf in the Oberwart district to be out of order. Repairing the damage is proving difficult. Family members are worried about their relatives.
Even though the dark storm clouds have cleared for the time being, many of those affected will still have to contend with the bitter consequences of the heavy storms of early June for a long time to come. Among those who suffer from this are the seniors of the nursing competence center.
Locked upstairs
Heavy rain caused water to leak in and the elevator was put out of service. Since then, residents who rely on a wheelchair or walker have been ‘locked’ on the upper floor.
Employees bring food upstairs
For some residents, this circumstance is difficult to deal with. The employees are also affected by the flood burden. “The nursing staff has to carry the delivered food upstairs in boxes,” reports one family.
Repairing the broken elevator is not so easy. The necessary spare parts are not available.
Director becomes calmer
“Usually you can expect a waiting period of four to six weeks. We are pleased that in our case the damage repair can be carried out much faster. We assume that at least one of the two lifts will be working safely again this week,” says Andreas Balog, director of the responsible Workers’ Samaritan Association. He thanks the community and the state for their close cooperation in acute emergencies such as floods.
