Gray-blue stripes in combination with the smell of oil and diesel led to a large-scale operation by five fire brigades at the Traunsee on Friday afternoon. During an exploration trip by boat, the Ebensee fire brigade located the pollution in the Seewinkel, at the mouth of the river Traun in an area of some 100 square meters.
The armed forces of Rindbach, Altmünster, Traunkirchen, Gmunden, troops from the diving base, the police, including a police helicopter, which was used to conduct a reconnaissance flight, and an expert from the BH Gmunden were called in to assist. At the same time, at the sailing club, oil booms were lowered into the water and two barrels were recovered from the lake by divers. “Initially, the barrels were suspected to have caused the pollution,” said commander Christoph Pilz. “But they were empty.”
After the first report from the water expert, everything was released. He identified the streaks as being of natural origin, caused by the above-average number of flowering plants this year. Samples were taken for more detailed analysis. The oil alarm was eventually called off at 10:06 PM.
