A mountain tour in the Silvretta group ended fatally for a 69-year-old Dutchman. The man was on his way from the Silvrettahorn to the Schneeglocke with his 60-year-old comrade when he suddenly slipped on a snow field and fell over a 200-meter-high wall on the Swiss side.
Two Dutch alpinists, aged 60 and 69, left on Friday from the Wiesbadner hut towards the Silvrettahorn. After reaching the 3,244-meter peak during lunch, the duo decided to continue their journey towards Schneeglocke (3,223 meters).
Fell over rock face
Around 1:30 p.m. they were driving around an off-road obstacle when disaster struck. The 69-year-old Dutchman fell, then slipped in front of his mountain companion across a snow field and eventually fell over a rock wall about 200 meters into the depths.
His companion immediately alerted the rescue services, but the Swiss air rescue team Rega was only able to save the fallen alpinist with the help of a winch.
