Since the new traffic regulations in Austria, which allow the confiscation of cars of extreme speeders, only two have been permanently confiscated. So far, a total of seventy speeding cars have been temporarily confiscated by officials.
According to standard.at, most acceptances took place in Lower Austria (18) and Tyrol (15). However, the exact number of seized vehicles cannot be answered concretely. According to the Ministry of the Interior, it is a “complex case”. There is therefore no office nationwide that can provide an exact number of seizures.
In the area more than 80 km/h
With the 34th amendment to the Road Traffic Act (StVO), since March 1, if the speed limit is more than 80 km/h above the local speed limit and 90 km/h above the speed limit outside the city, the vehicle can be seized and subsequently auctioned.
Seizure for a maximum of 14 days
If the speeding offender is driving a vehicle that does not belong to him, law enforcement authorities have the option to temporarily confiscate the vehicle on the spot for up to 14 days. In this case, the vehicles may not be confiscated and auctioned. This also applies to leased or rented cars. In such cases, a lifelong driving ban will be noted on the speeding offender’s driving license.
However, around 80 state criminal authorities throughout Austria are responsible for the eventual confiscation and possible auction of speeding cars.
Two cars permanently seized
One of the two permanently confiscated cars belongs to a 21-year-old from Lower Austria who was caught by the police at a speed of 247 km/h. So far, however, without an auction process. The second vehicle was in the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district in Styria. Also without an auction.
Last case so far in Tyrol
Recently, a Tyrolean (20) with three children (4, 9 and 10 years old) in the car had his vehicle and driver’s license revoked after he was driving 74 km/h too fast on a country road.
