Major operation Thursday evening in Vöcklabruck (Upper Austria): The old music school was on fire! Fire came out of the roof when the emergency services arrived; the lives of the firefighters were in danger when they entered because the structure of the building was too bad.
The fire brigade was first alerted at around 9pm, but as the fire continued to spread, additional emergency services were gradually called in, with five fire brigades eventually responding.
The fire probably broke out in the former music school, which had been empty for years, and spread quickly through the floors to the roof. Because the building structure is so poor – sagging ceilings, risk of collapse – an internal attack was hardly possible. The risk that firefighters would be injured was too great.
Roof had to be opened
Two telescopic mast platforms were ordered on site, as well as a turntable ladder. In order to better combat the fire, the rescuers had to open the roof and the new DRILL-X drill extinguisher was also used. Rescue workers and an emergency doctor were present, but no one was injured.
The fire brigade was able to leave again around 03:00, only the Florianijünger from Vöcklabruck remained as a fire guard at the building, which was completely destroyed after the fire. The cause of the fire is still unclear, investigators are on site.
Renovation project not carried out
In 2017, the former state music school was sold to a company from Mühlviertel during a bidding process. The more than 1,000 square meter site on Bahnhofstrasse was to be redeveloped and apartments, shops and offices were to be built there as early as 2019;
