There are currently 1,500 active volcanoes on the Earth’s surface – with 50 to 60 eruptions per year, some stronger, some weaker. According to Ubimet expert Nikolas Zimmermann, things deep beneath the Earth’s surface rumble much more often than we perceive.
Currently, 27 volcanoes are erupting. In the last 48 hours alone, violent earthquakes have occurred in their region, as the graph below shows.

“Kron”: Why now and why so often?
Nikolas Zimmermann: Earthquakes occur all the time all over the world. Even strong earthquakes with a magnitude of 6 or higher occur on average every three days.
And we don’t notice that?
The epicenters of these strong earthquakes are often located in areas with low population density, stable buildings or in the middle of the sea and therefore do not have serious consequences. That is why they are not noticed by the world audience.
But this year there is a lot of unrest in the belly of the earth?
That’s right, this year there were several strong earthquakes in regions with increased population density or poor building conditions. The impact was therefore particularly bad this year.
Is it all a coincidence?
Yes, because the total number of all earthquakes worldwide has remained relatively stable over a longer period of time.
And what’s going on with the volcanoes?
The same random principle applies here, because eruptions are usually accompanied by increased earthquake activity. Sometimes, as is currently the case in Iceland, the Earth would shake violently every few seconds due to the increasing pressure of the constantly rising magma.
