The European Commission announced in Brussels on Wednesday that it was terminating proceedings against Poland for violations of the rule of law. The procedure was started in 2017 due to the judicial reforms of the then right-wing nationalist Polish government.
The Commission said earlier this month that it had completed its investigation and concluded that there was no longer any risk. The majority of the responsible European ministers also had no objections.
Tusk turned the reforms inside out
Following an assessment of the recent reforms that the new pro-European Polish government under Donald Tusk has implemented and plans to implement, the Commission has proposed closing the procedure.
EU Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders cited as an example measures to restore the independence of the judicial system. During a ministerial meeting, only Hungary raised objections to the shutdown. Hungary is now the last country against which an Article 7 procedure is underway.
