A dramatic incident took place in the Vorarlberg community of Brand. An 80-year-old pensioner collapsed in his apartment on Sunday. He lay on the floor for about two and a half days before he could use his last bit of strength to call emergency services.
It must have been an unimaginable torment that the 80-year-old had to endure. The pensioner, who lived alone, had his cries for help unheard; it was only on Tuesday evening that he managed to crawl to the telephone and call 911.
Apartment door broken open
Because the apartment was locked, the local fire department was called. After a short investigation of the situation, the apartment door was broken open using a “pullfix”, after which the man was rescued and taken to the hospital.
“Neighbors can save lives”
The case is also disturbing because the pensioner’s suffering went unnoticed for so long. The Brand fire brigade therefore made an urgent appeal to the population: “Attentive neighbors can save lives! It is better to ask too much than too little. If you do not see or hear from your neighbors for a while, do not hesitate to take action!”
