Drove away with 200 men – even warning shots did not stop the Linz drivers

Date:

A 35-year-old man from Linz evaded a traffic stop on the Innkreis motorway near Meggenhofen on 10 June. In order to escape, he raced at a speed of 200 km/h across the motorway and two federal roads. Even warning shots from the police did not stop him. Now the man from Linz is in custody after the wild chase.

The man, who had a criminal record, was noticed by the immigration police because of his driving style. But he ignored requests to stop. He accelerated and initially raced at a speed of 200 km/h towards Suben. Near Aistersheim he tried to hide with his car in a parking lot, but failed.

Warning shots from the police
As the officers approached the vehicle, he drove back onto the highway in the wrong direction. His escape then took him along federal highways—again with 200 belongings—to Grieskirchen, where he abandoned the car on a dead-end road and ran away. When the police fired warning shots, he jumped over a railing some four to five meters into the depths and landed in a railroad underpass.

Complaint filed
A search that day was unsuccessful. However, the man from Linz was investigated and arrested on July 2. The Wels Public Prosecutor’s Office has now filed charges of suppression of documents (the license plates were stolen), as well as resistance to state authority, coercion and endangering physical safety. The penalty is up to four and a half years in prison.
