A pickup truck plowed into a crowd celebrating the U.S. national holiday in New York, killing two people and injuring at least seven others.
The incident took place in Corleone’s Hook Park in southern Manhattan, where hundreds of people were celebrating the national holiday that evening, police said late Thursday night.
Police said the driver of the pickup truck may have been under the influence of alcohol. There was no evidence of a terrorist background. One person was arrested at the scene of the crash, the New York Times reported, citing a police spokesman. The investigation was ongoing.
The American national holiday of July 4, which dates back to the Declaration of Independence in 1776, is traditionally celebrated with parties, parades, and fireworks.
