Labour leader officially appointed Prime Minister by King Charles

Date:

Just two hours after Rishi Sunak announced his resignation, Britain already has a new prime minister. Following the usual procedure, the election winner, Labour leader Keir Starmer, was appointed to the highest government office by King Charles.

In Britain’s constitutional monarchy, although elections are held, the prime minister is appointed by the monarch. He can then officially begin forming a government, appointing ministers, etc.

Sunak announced his resignation as party leader
Rishi Sunak, the current leader of the Conservatives, failed to announce his resignation on Friday morning after his party’s historic election debacle, after which he was also forced to present himself to the King to officially resign from his post.

Shortly afterwards, Starmer was appointed the new Prime Minister by Charles and he has already gone to the official residence at 10 Downing Street, where he was greeted by a cheering crowd.

The British Prime Minister lived in the house on Downing Street during his term of office, and sometimes with his family. Incidentally, the house cat in question is no less popular than the historic building. The current cat ‘Larry’ has kept the official residence mouse-free for six prime ministers.

In his first Downing Street speech, Starmer thanked his predecessor Sunak but stressed that people had “voted for change”. They are now moving fast and want to “regain the trust of the people” as soon as possible.
