Just in time for each session of the state parliament, climate activists come to protest against the construction of the city tunnel in Feldkirch. For the taxpayer, this will be an expensive affair. The initial sympathy for the activists is waning, even among state employees.
In the run-up to the state parliament session in July 2023, climate activists blocked the entrance to the garage of the country house with a 400-kilogram concrete boat, causing a lot of chaos. With their actions, the activists want to express their dissatisfaction with the construction of the Feldkirch city tunnel, the so-called tunnel spider, and promote greater understanding for climate protection.
Since there is a demonstration ban on the day of a session of the state parliament and – in the event of a violation – the police are also obliged to evacuate, the forecourt of the country house and the garage entrance have been closely guarded since the ‘boat operation’.
Almost 70,000 euros per year
The farm workers are supported not only by the police, but also by the Austrian Security Service (ÖWD). The costs for the ÖWD amount to 6,300 euros per state parliament session. These are paid from the state budget. At eleven meetings per year, the taxpayer is ultimately asked to pay almost 70,000 euros.
Many farm workers now have a limited understanding of the activists. “They don’t even know what they’re demonstrating for,” said one farm worker, who expressed her displeasure to the “Krone”. She was asked by a “professional demonstrator from Germany” whether she was also against tarantulas (!).
