A private birthday party in the US state of Kentucky ended in a bloodbath when a man suddenly opened fire, killing at least four people.
According to local police, three other people were seriously but not life-threateningly injured. The dead were two men and two women. Three of the fatalities were under the age of 20. The suspected shooter, a 20-year-old, is said to have shot himself after a chase with police.
Motive still unclear
The background to the crime is still unclear. American media report that the shooter would have known some of the partygoers. However, he himself was not invited to the celebration.
“It’s very emotional,” a visibly shaken police spokesman said at a press conference. He knows that these kinds of incidents happen all over the country. But it was the first time something like this happened in Florence. “We are preparing for it and hoping that it never happens. Unfortunately, we have now come into contact with this, just like so many other police departments and cities in the country.”
