Controversial event – Six injured in bloody bull hunt in Pamplona

Date:

Despite all the criticism, the bull hunt took place in Pamplona in the north. The bloody spectacle left a total of six people injured; several runners were taken to hospital.

Six people were injured after the first bull hunt of this year’s Sanfermines festival: one runner suffered head trauma, while the others reportedly suffered bruises, a medical service spokesman told state television channel RTVE.

The last fatality occurred in 2009
The festival in honor of the city’s saint, San Fermín, began the day before and ends next Sunday. Every day from 8:00 a.m., six fighting bulls, some weighing more than 600 kilograms, and several tame lead oxen are chased through the narrow streets of the old town to the bullring for the evening bullfights. Dozens of runners are injured each year as the mostly young men test their courage over the 875-meter course. Since 1924, there have been 16 deaths, the last in 2009.

This year, animal rights groups protested the event again. They called the hunt, which has been held since 1591, “medieval cruelty” and called for an end to the running of the bulls and all bloody bullfights. Despite all the criticism, the city festival continues to enjoy great popularity and attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world every year.
