The Israeli military said it had “eliminated” a top commander of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia in a plane strike in southern Lebanon on Sunday, saying the vehicle the man was driving was hit by a rocket.
According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the targeted Hezbollah fighter was Mustafa Hassan Salman, an operative in the Hezbollah militia’s rocket unit. The IDF said he was involved in the planning and execution of numerous terrorist attacks against the State of Israel.
“The IDF will continue to combat the threat posed by the terrorist organization Hezbollah in order to defend the State of Israel,” an Israeli army spokesman said. Hezbollah, for its part, will not stop its attacks on Israel until there is a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Fear of spreading the conflict
Israel and Hezbollah have been fighting almost every day since the Gaza war began, and the intensity has increased significantly in recent times. There are fears that the conflict will spread.
Israel wants the Iran-backed Shiite militia to withdraw behind the Litani River, 30 kilometers from the border – as stipulated by a UN resolution.
