There were dramatic scenes on a cycle path in the Neusiedl am See district of Burgenland this weekend. A wheelchair user (44) lost control of his electric vehicle, left the track and fell over an embankment.
The victim of the accident was trapped under the heavy wheelchair. A witness raised the alarm – major fire and rescue operations!
Dramatic turnaround
The accident happened on Saturday shortly after noon in Jois. It was summer weather for excursions. The excursion of a 44-year-old man with his electric wheelchair on the Haniftal cycle path took a dramatic turn. The wheelchair suddenly left the road and fell five metres into a ditch. A driver coming from behind became an eyewitness and her emergency call led to a large-scale action.
“We had to act quickly”
Paramedics from the Red Cross and the police were already at the scene of the accident when 21 comrades from the local fire brigade arrived. “We had to act quickly. The man was still trapped under the wheelchair,” said the volunteers from Jois. The rescue in the impassable terrain proved extremely difficult, but was accomplished in a short time. The Red Cross and the fire brigade doctor were then able to work together immediately to provide the 44-year-old from the Neusiedl am See district with initial medical care. The injured victim had to be taken to hospital for further treatment.
Bumps on the bike path
It was initially unclear whether a technical defect or a driving error had caused the serious accident. However, according to initial investigations, unevenness on the cycle path could have led to this. “We hope in any case that the patient will recover quickly,” according to the emergency services.
