Stuck American truck, military equipment and explosion hazard: On February 26, scenes in Salzburg played out as if they were in a second-rate thriller, but they were reality. In any case, it is now clear: the American army will pay for the damage caused by the wanderings of American soldiers!
On the afternoon of February 26 of this year, there was great excitement in Salzburg: an American military convoy got stuck in a highway underpass in Salzburg-Liefering. Because two trucks were transporting military goods, including explosives, from a NATO country in the south towards Germany for a major exercise, there was even a risk of explosion.
Western highway closed over a large area
Police, fire brigade, military police and co immediately closed off a large part of the western highway, resulting in a long traffic jam and many big question marks. It was probably one of the most bizarre incidents on domestic territory so far this year.
Wrong way round
On February 26, everything went wrong for the thousands of foreign military transports that are carried out and approved via Austria every year. Instead of continuing on the Tauernautobahn towards Germany, the group of three vehicles took a wrong turn just before Salzburg.
During the detour, the accident occurred in Salzburg-Liefering and caused a lot of damage. Salzburg AG initially estimates the trolleybus service at around 100,000 euros.
3000 euros overnight costs
In addition, according to a parliamentary question by Christian Hafenecker (FPÖ), there are approximately 3,000 euros in overnight costs incurred by the American soldiers in the Schwarzenberg barracks.
According to the Ministry of Defense and Salzburg AG, the US military will now do this.
