White shirt, dark pants, clean sneakers. Two twenty-year-olds sit very nicely before the jury of the regional court of Klagenfurt. But the appearance of a ‘model boy’ is deceptive – there is darkness behind it. Because Sam and Leo (names changed) are said to be behind the gruesome death of a 30-year-old. The man bled to death from 18 stab wounds.
“In my twenty years, I have rarely seen anything so cold-blooded,” said Judge Uwe Dumpelnik, shocked by the callousness of the two young adults standing before him. Because it is not only the alleged act that shows particular cruelty, but also the so-called ‘after-the-fact behavior’. But one after the other.
It is a cold January evening. Sam and Leo go out with friends and meet by chance in a bar in Klagenfurt. They talk, complain that they don’t have enough money for alcohol and drugs, and Sam suggests visiting a casual acquaintance. It was known that 30-year-old Marco L. had a small refrigerator in his apartment that was supposed to contain drugs, mainly cocaine.
“We went from the restaurant to him,” they both say. One of the few statements that agree with that. In everything else there are inconsistencies. When the knife came into play, what exactly was planned. The fact is that the duo showed up at L.’s house and that he did not survive the visit. “I remember being scared and stabbing him – twice,” says Sam.
Forensic doctor Alexandra Meierhofer can refute this: “There are a total of 18 stab wounds – 17 in the front of the body, another in the shoulder blade, so hard that even the tip of the knife stuck in the wound.” suffered a heart attack, a pulmonary embolism, several ribs, muscles and even the liver were severed. Could the young man have survived if Leo, who was supposedly standing there frozen with shock, had received help?
Everything was covered in blood
“We’re talking about a time window of three to five minutes,” says expert Meierhofer. “But the victim simply didn’t get the chance to be saved.” Because instead of calling the emergency services, both suspects ran away. Not far. And probably not particularly affected: “I went home, washed off the blood and changed,” says the main defendant. “It was all covered in blood. Then I had my friend drive me back to the city.” “Did you leave after such an experience?” asks a professional judge. “Yes, yes, I arranged it with friends.”
Long prison sentences
It doesn’t take long for the jury to reach a verdict: Sam is found guilty of murder and sentenced to 17 years in prison; his accomplice gets away with almost twelve years in prison as an accessory to the aggravated robbery – not legally binding.
