At least 29 people, mostly women and children, were killed in an attack on a tent camp in the southern Gaza Strip on Tuesday (see video above). The victims had gathered earlier for a soccer match on the grounds of a school, an eyewitness reported.
“They were watching a football match. There were wounded and martyrs (…). People were thrown around and body parts were scattered, (there was) blood,” said eyewitness Ghassal Nasser. “People were playing.” There were no sounds of planes or anything like that.
According to Palestinian sources, at least 29 people were killed, most of them women and children. In the nearby Nasser Hospital, dozens of people said goodbye to their relatives on Wednesday before the funeral. “The schools were overcrowded with people and the streets were also full,” said Asmaa Kudeidh. Suddenly, a rocket hit and destroyed the whole place.
Military: Check reports
The Israeli military says it is investigating reports of civilian casualties. The incident occurred when precision ammunition was used against a fighter from the radical Islamist Hamas group involved in the Oct. 7 attack on Israel. It was unclear whether the military was aware of the soccer match when the attack was ordered.
At least 1,200 Israelis and over 38,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began.
