The Red Bull heir wants to build a depot for vintage cars and art objects in Salzburg. The public must remain outside this time.
When building a private garage, Salzburg’s design advisory board is rarely involved. But this garage is special. None other than Red Bull heir Mark Mateschitz wants to build a new depot for the vehicles and art objects he owns on Karolingerstrasse in Salzburg-Maxglan.
Hangar 7, just a stone’s throw from the planned garage, is reaching its limits. The futuristic building at Salzburg Airport has already served as a temporary showroom for many vintage cars, racing cars and aircraft. It is actually a kind of Red Bull car museum. Mateschitz also has countless other cars and art objects scattered around the world. So far, none of them have found a worthy home – and will now end up in the new building. Only: the depot remains private. It is only accessible to invited guests on special occasions and smaller events.
“Little prior knowledge of the project”
City politicians and experts discussed the Mateschitz Garage in the design advisory board. For a long time it was unclear what was behind the idea. And even among the members of the advisory board, the designs of Berger+Parkinnen, who are responsible for the Salzburg Paracelsusbad, left questions unanswered. “There was hardly any prior knowledge about the project,” says alderman Anna Schiester (Greens).
There is no legal recourse against the private project; that is fine. “Improvements are needed in the area of urban development and architecture,” says Schiester. After the next meeting of the advisory board in the fall, we will know which direction the garage construction is actually going.
